The $3 citric acid descale fix

You will need

• Citric acid powder · Bunnings or Woolies home baking/cleaning aisle — roughly $3–5 for a 500g bag (Lectric or generic brand)
• Fresh water · Tap water is fine
• Large jug or bowl · To catch the run-through water — anything 1–2 litre capacity

Step 1

Mix your descaling solution

Dissolve one tablespoon of citric acid powder into one litre of warm water and stir until fully clear. This is gentler than vinegar and won't leave any taste or smell behind. It's the same acid used in commercial descalers — just a fraction of the price.

Step 2

Empty and rinse the water tank

Remove the machine's water reservoir and give it a quick rinse. Pour your citric acid solution into the tank as if it were normal water. Make sure the drip tray and a large jug are in place to catch the liquid that comes through.

Step 3

Run a half-cycle, then pause

Start a brew cycle (no coffee pod or grounds) and let about half the solution run through, then switch the machine off. Let it sit for 20–30 minutes so the citric acid can break down the limescale buildup inside the boiler and pipes.

Step 4

Finish the cycle

Turn the machine back on and let the rest of the solution run through completely. You'll often see slightly cloudy or discoloured water come out — that's the dissolved scale leaving the machine. Repeat a second time if your machine is heavily scaled or hasn't been descaled in over a year.

Step 5

Flush with fresh water — twice

Refill the tank with plain fresh water and run two full cycles through with no solution. This rinses away any remaining citric acid so your next coffee tastes exactly as it should. Your machine should now heat faster and produce better pressure.

The stop point

If the machine won't heat at all, trips your safety switch, makes grinding or rattling noises, or leaks from the base → stop, unplug it, and call an appliance repairer (not a DIY fix).
