The 30-second bulb swap (done right)

You will need

• Replacement LED bulb (correct wattage/base type) · Bunnings or Woolies — LED 9W bayonet (B22) or screw cap (E27) ~$5–$8 each, check your old bulb's base before you go
• Step stool or small ladder (if needed) · Borrow from a neighbour or grab a Bunnings 2-step stool ~$25 — never stand on a chair
• Dry cloth or rubber gloves · Helps grip the bulb and protects hands — any hardware or home store, ~$3

Step 1

Switch off and wait

Flick the light switch off before you do anything else. If the bulb has been on, wait 5 minutes — LED bulbs stay cooler than old halogens but it's still worth letting it cool. This also kills any residual current at the socket.

Step 2

Check your base type

Most Australian fittings use a bayonet cap (B22 — two little pins that lock in with a push-and-twist) or a screw cap (E27 — just twists out). Look at the dead bulb once it's out so you buy the exact match. Grab the wattage number off the side too if it's still readable.

Step 3

Remove the old bulb

For bayonet: push the bulb gently inward, twist anti-clockwise about a quarter turn, then pull straight down. For screw cap: simply turn anti-clockwise until it comes free. Use your dry cloth or rubber gloves for a firm grip.

Step 4

Fit the new LED bulb

For bayonet: line up the pins with the slots, push in and twist clockwise until it clicks. For screw cap: thread it in clockwise until snug — firm, not forced. Don't overtighten or you'll crack the fitting.

Step 5

Test and reset if needed

Flick the switch on. If it works, job done! If nothing happens and other lights in the house are also out, head to your switchboard and look for a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker — flip it back to ON. If only this light is still dead after that, it's time to call an electrician.

The stop point

If the light fitting is flickering before the bulb blew, shows scorch marks, smells burnt, or the new bulb still doesn't work after checking the safety switch → stop, you need a licensed electrician.
