The dish soap trick that unblocks most toilets

You will need

• Dish soap (e.g. Fairy or Palmolive) · Already in your kitchen, or ~$3 at Woolies
• A kettle of hot (not boiling) water · Tap water heated to just below boiling — your kettle works perfectly
• A flange plunger (the one with a rubber skirt inside the cup) · ~$12–$18 at Bunnings — this is the only type that actually works on toilets; a flat cup plunger is for sinks
• Rubber gloves · Any variety, ~$5 at Woolies or Bunnings

Step 1

Add dish soap first

Squirt a generous amount of dish soap — about 3–4 big squeezes — directly into the toilet bowl. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes. The soap acts as a lubricant and helps break up the blockage.

Step 2

Pour in hot (not boiling) water

Fill your kettle and let it cool for 2 minutes after boiling so it's hot but not scalding. Pour it slowly into the bowl from waist height — the height adds a bit of pressure. Boiling water can crack a ceramic bowl, so don't skip the cooling step.

Step 3

Wait another 5 minutes

Give the hot soapy water time to work its way around the blockage. You should see the water level slowly start to drop if it's working. If it does drop, you may not even need the plunger.

Step 4

Plunge with the right technique

Put on your rubber gloves, place the flange plunger so the inner skirt goes into the drain hole, and press down firmly to create a seal. Push and pull in smooth, steady strokes for about 20 seconds — it's the suction on the pull stroke that breaks the clog, not just pushing. Repeat 2–3 times.

Step 5

Flush and confirm

Once water drains freely, do a test flush. If it flushes cleanly, you're done. Run a second flush to make sure everything is clear.

The stop point

If the toilet is still blocked after two full rounds of the soap-and-plunge method, or if water is backing up into your shower or other drains at the same time, stop — this is a deeper blockage in your main sewer line. Call a licensed plumber.
